Geometric patterns, the shape of a tree, glints of sparkliness to light the long dark days ahead. Decorating trees with fairy lights has replaced November bonfires and fireworks.
In traditional lore, Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder, and Bliksem. (Dunder and Bliksem are the dutch words for thunder and lightning.) Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer joined the team in the early 20th-century followed later by his brother Ralph the Infrared Nosed Reindeer.

In the night I stood and watched the clouds softly drifting. Mild from the West, around the Supermoon reflected sunlight. The damp and dripping hedgerow sparkling. From the shadows into the clearing light, a small furry animal, pale, slight hint of rust came towards me nose to ground. A cat? No. Tail too bushy, nose too pointy. It looked up at me then quietly turned around and left.

Ingenious craftsmen, Christmas elves are busy helping Santa make toys for children in his workshop. This was originally thought to be near the North Pole, but it now seems more likely to be in Lapland a better place to keep reindeer. They are said to be immortal and possess magical powers. An explanation perhaps for the amazing variety of ever increasingly complex devices wrought to amuse and entertain children by these good hearted but sometimes mischievous, highly skilled, rather fairy like gnomes.

Popular in Scandinavian countries the Julbocken is a straw figurine of a goat, traditionally made from the last grain of the harvest, bundled in red ribbons and kept as a token of hope for the New Year.
